New Year’s Eve is the one night a year I trade my garden gloves for a little sparkle. We keep it simple at our place, a pot of chili, a card table full of games and the kids banging pots on the porch at midnight, but I still like my hands to look ready for the champagne toast.
Here are 30 New Year’s nails I gathered from nail artists and bloggers whose work I admire. You will find gold glitter, black and gold, silver disco nails, fireworks, stars, champagne chrome and a few bright and cozy picks for the first days of January. Each idea links to the site it came from, and I added how to copy it at home. If you want more winter looks, our December nails and Christmas nail ideas have plenty, and our New Year’s Eve party ideas will help you plan the rest of the night.
1. All over gold glitter
SaveCredit: Green Wedding Shoes
If you only do one thing for New Year’s Eve, do this. Short nails covered in chunky gold glitter look like you dipped them in the champagne.
Paint one coat of a sheer nude, then dab a chunky gold glitter polish on with the brush instead of stroking it, so the flakes land flat. Two dabbed coats and a thick top coat give you that solid, jewelry look.
2. Gold flake tips
SaveCredit: Ella+Mila
This one is my pick for a woman who wants sparkle but still has to feed the chickens on New Year’s morning. The bare base grows out without anyone noticing.
Paint a sheer pink or nude base. Brush a little clear top coat on the top third of each nail, press gold leaf flakes into it with a damp brush and seal everything with two coats of top coat so the edges stay smooth.
3. Solid metallic gold
SaveCredit: JINsoon
A plain metallic gold is as dressy as a sequin dress and a lot easier to wear. JINsoon showed it with a handful of glittered gold stars, and I could not stop looking.
Metallic polish shows every brush stroke, so use long, even strokes from the cuticle to the tip and do not go back over a wet spot. Two thin coats and a glossy top coat make it look like real metal.
4. Gold glitter tips with tiny pearls
SaveCredit: Blush & Pearls
This one feels like the grown up version of party sparkle. The pearls make it look like you paid a salon for it.
Paint a sheer pink base and sponge gold glitter onto the tips in a soft curve. While your top coat is still wet, set three or four tiny flat back pearls on each nail with a dotting tool or a toothpick, then add one more coat around them.
5. Gold glitter and matte white with gold lines
SaveCredit: Blush & Pearls
I love how this mixes a soft color with a loud one. The white keeps it calm and the gold glitter brings the party.
Paint two nails in gold glitter and the rest in a creamy white or pale pink. Finish the white nails with a matte top coat, then paint two thin curved lines near the cuticle with a gold striping polish or gold nail foil tape.
6. Black and gold art deco tips
SaveCredit: Green Wedding Shoes
This is the one that looks like it came straight out of an old movie. It goes with a black dress and a coupe glass of something bubbly.
Paint a sheer nude base, then paint a deep V shaped black tip on each nail. Trace a thin line of gold glitter along the edge of the black with a striping brush, and add a top coat so the lines stay crisp.
7. Black and gold marble chrome
SaveCredit: Green Wedding Shoes
This set has a little bit of everything I like, black, gold and that liquid shine. It looks like polished stone.
Paint a sheer base, then swirl thin lines of black polish across each nail with a fine brush. Once that dries, rub gold chrome powder over the swirls on a no wipe gel top coat and seal it with one more cured coat.
8. Matte black with a gold glitter fade
SaveCredit: Blush & Pearls
Matte black is a little moody, so I like to warm it up with gold. It is perfect for an evening party.
Paint most nails in black and finish them with a matte top coat. On one or two nails, sponge gold glitter up from the tip so it fades into the black, and paint a single thin gold stripe down the middle with striping polish.
9. Black with gold leaf flakes
SaveCredit: JINsoon
Black and gold is the classic New Year’s pair for a reason. Little gold flakes on a dark nail look like fireworks frozen in place.
Paint two coats of a black polish, ideally one with a fine shimmer. Press a few small gold leaf flakes into the wet top coat with tweezers, keeping them random, and seal with a second top coat.
10. Black and rose gold chunky glitter
SaveCredit: Blush & Pearls
This is the one for the friend who loves a little extra. Rose gold and black is softer than plain gold but just as fancy.
Paint black on every nail, then add chunky rose gold glitter. Cover two nails fully and only sprinkle it on the tips of the rest. Use a thick top coat or two so the big glitter pieces do not snag your sweater.
11. Black glitter with a gold star accent
SaveCredit: Dazzle Dry
Stars are my favorite New Year’s motif. They feel hopeful, like wishing on the first night of the year.
Paint most nails in black with a glitter top coat. Make one nail on each hand gold glitter and press two or three small black star stickers onto it, then seal with a top coat.
12. Black star French tips
SaveCredit: Green Wedding Shoes
This is the easy version of a starry night. It takes a few minutes and looks great on short or long nails.
Paint a sheer pink base with a thin gold glitter tip. Add two or three tiny black star decals near each tip, or paint them with a small star stamp, and seal with a top coat.
13. Midnight clock nail art
SaveCredit: ND Nail Supply
I love a set that tells a little story. A clock at midnight, a sparkle of gold and the words New Year are hard to beat for the big night.
Mix black, white and nude nails. Paint a simple clock face on one nail with the hands near twelve, write New Year on another with a fine liner brush and add gold foil or gold glitter to the rest. Practice the lettering on paper first.
14. Fireworks on black
SaveCredit: Dazzle Dry
These look like the sky over our pasture when the neighbors set off fireworks at midnight. The kids think they are magic.
Paint black nails. Use a thin striping brush to paint lines that burst out from one point in gold and pink, then add a few dots of silver glitter around them. Seal with a glossy top coat.
15. Fireworks cat eye in wine
SaveCredit: ND Nail Supply
Cat eye polish moves when you move your hand, so these fireworks look like they are really going off.
Paint a wine colored cat eye gel and hold a magnet over each wet nail to pull the shimmer to the center. Cure it, then paint thin firework bursts on top with a fine liner and gold or rose gel and seal with a top coat.
16. Rainbow glitter streamers
SaveCredit: Green Wedding Shoes
This one makes me think of party streamers and noise makers. It is fun without being too loud.
Paint a sheer milky base. With a thin striping brush, pull lines of red, blue, green and silver glitter polish from the tip toward the middle of the nail so they look like streamers. Seal with a top coat.
17. Silver glitter fade tips
SaveCredit: Green Wedding Shoes
If gold is not your color, silver is just as festive. A soft fade looks light and pretty, like frost on the window.
Paint a sheer pink base. Dab silver holographic glitter onto the tips with a makeup sponge, using more at the very edge and less as you move down. Two thin rounds look better than one heavy one.
18. Mirror silver disco nails
SaveCredit: Green Wedding Shoes
These are the shiniest thing at the party, and they match the disco ball. My daughter wore them last year and everyone asked about them.
Paint a gel base and cure it, then add a no wipe top coat and cure that too. Rub silver chrome powder over each nail with a sponge tip until it looks like a mirror, brush away the extra and seal it with a cured top coat.
19. Disco ball checker accent
SaveCredit: Green Wedding Shoes
This takes the disco ball idea one step further. It is a fun way to show off a little nail art without doing every finger.
Paint most nails in silver holographic glitter. On two accent nails paint black and white grid lines with a striping brush, fill some squares with silver chrome or glitter and add a tiny white sparkle burst.
20. Champagne chrome with tiny gems
SaveCredit: Dazzle Dry
This is the most elegant set on the list in my eyes. It is soft enough for church on New Year’s morning and shiny enough for the party.
Paint a sheer nude base, then rub a champagne or pale gold chrome powder over the top half of each nail. Add one small crystal near the cuticle on a few nails and seal with a top coat.
21. Champagne toast nail art
SaveCredit: Dazzle Dry
A little champagne bottle and glass on your nails is a sweet nod to the midnight toast. I like it with sparkly rose gold.
Paint two nails rose gold glitter and the rest matte black. On the black nails paint a simple white outline of a bottle and a glass with a fine brush, fill them with a dab of glitter and add a few white dots for bubbles.
22. Confetti sprinkle French
SaveCredit: JINsoon
This set looks like you just pulled the string on a party popper. It is happy and a little silly, which is how New Year’s should feel.
Paint a sheer pink base. Dab a black and silver confetti glitter polish onto just the tips, pressing it down so the larger pieces lie flat, and finish with a thick glossy top coat.
23. Rainbow rhinestone dots
SaveCredit: Green Wedding Shoes
Little colored gems scattered on a nude nail look like confetti on the floor at midnight. It is cheerful and very easy.
Paint a sheer nude base. Put a dot of clear top coat where each gem should go, pick up tiny colored rhinestones with a wax pencil or a damp toothpick and press them down. Seal around them, not over them, so they keep their sparkle.
24. Confetti dots on black
SaveCredit: Semilac
I like a bright color for New Year’s when everyone else is wearing gold. Magenta with confetti dots on black is a happy surprise.
Paint most nails in a bright magenta. On two accent nails paint black, then use a dotting tool to add little dots of yellow, pink and purple all over so they look like confetti.
25. Burgundy with a glitter accent
SaveCredit: Blush & Pearls
Burgundy carries you right from Christmas dinner to the New Year’s party. It is deep and rich, like a glass of red wine.
Paint most nails in a glossy burgundy. On the accent nails, dab a red, pink and gold glitter over a sheer pink base so it fades from the tip toward the cuticle. Add a glossy top coat to everything.
26. Navy with gold zodiac art
SaveCredit: JINsoon
Navy is my favorite New Year’s color that nobody else thinks of. It looks like the night sky, and gold details make it feel like a celebration.
Paint two coats of a deep navy. Use small gold nail stickers or a fine gold striping pen to add your zodiac sign or a few stars, then seal with a top coat.
27. Green cat eye French with gold stars
SaveCredit: ND Nail Supply
Green and gold is a fresh change from black and gold. The cat eye tips catch the light like little fireworks.
Paint a sheer nude base and add a green cat eye polish only on the tips, holding a magnet near them to pull the shimmer. Add a few tiny gold four point stars and dots with gold gel or decals, then seal it.
28. Aurora chrome
SaveCredit: Ella+Mila
Aurora chrome shifts from pink to green to silver as you move your hand. It looks like the northern lights we sometimes see from the porch.
Paint a sheer white or pale pink gel base and cure it. Rub an aurora or holographic chrome powder over a no wipe top coat, then cure a final top coat over it. Long almond or stiletto shapes show the color shift best.
29. Bronze chrome
SaveCredit: Beyond Polish
This one is for anyone who wants something warm instead of cold silver. It looks like an old copper pot polished up for company.
Paint a brown or olive base and cure it. Rub a bronze chrome powder over a no wipe top coat with a sponge tip until it shines, then seal it with one more cured top coat.
30. Icy blue for New Year’s Day
SaveCredit: Melissa Jane Lee
After all the gold and glitter, I like something calm for the first days of January. Icy blue with a few silver sparkles feels like a fresh start.
Paint a mix of pale periwinkle and sheer nude nails. Add silver glitter to one or two nails and paint a tiny white starburst on another with a fine brush. Seal with a glossy top coat.
How to make New Year’s nails last through the party
Start clean. Push back your cuticles and wipe each nail with rubbing alcohol before the base coat so the polish grips.
Paint thin coats. Two thin coats dry harder than one thick one, and they chip less when you are washing up after supper.
Cap the tips. Run the brush along the very edge of each nail with every coat, including the top coat.
Use a thick top coat on glitter. Chunky glitter and gems snag on sweaters and hair, so a heavy glossy layer keeps them smooth.
Do them a day early. Paint your nails on the 30th so they are fully hard by the party, and add one fresh top coat on New Year’s Eve afternoon.
